About Velenje Coalmine Wind Instrument Orchestra
The officially documented beginning of the miners’ band – today called the Velenje Coalmine Wind Instrument Orchestra – dates back to 1919, however, in all likelihood it was originally started even earlier. Bands were characteristic of mining settlements and were a vital part of miners’ life in moments of joy as well as sadness.

Nowadays, the Velenje Coalmine Wind Instrument Orchestra is a co-creator of the cultural and social scene in Velenje and the wider area, performing all over Slovenia as well as abroad. It has evolved into an outstanding ensemble of amateur musicians with longstanding experience and displaying great proficiency. In addition to traditional wind band music i.e. marches it also performs modern, classical, conventional as well as non-conventional pieces of all genres of music. Gold medals won at world wind band competitions held in Kerkrade in the Netherlands and top placements at other competitions leave no doubt as to its quality.
The orchestra features a number of outstanding soloists who also perform in other ensembles. New generations of musicians for the VCWIO come from the Youth Wind Instrument Orchestra. The Velenje Coalmine Wind Instrument Orchestra is conducted by Matjaž Emeršič.
